York U Scholars’ Hub Speaker Series at Markham Public Library
York University and Markham Public Library invite you to the York University Scholars’ Hub in Markham.
At this session, Regina Rini, a York University professor in philosophy, will deliver her talk titled Everyone is Wrong on the Internet: Disagreement and Error in Social Media Discourse.
Description
Public debate requires that we regularly encounter people we disagree with, and that we respond appropriately to other people’s mistakes (mistakes, that is, according to us!). In a well-functioning democracy, we have open discussions with people we think are wrong, hoping to change their minds, while also acknowledging that they have a right to sincere beliefs we don’t accept. Social media debate seems to be worsening the quality of public discourse, encouraging us to treat others as hopelessly misguided, or targets for trolling, or even as bots without real opinions at all. What can we do – as policymakers or as individual citizens – to fix the broken state of social media debate?
