Y-EMERGE’s ‘Rethinking Vulnerability’ Lecture
Dr. Jason von Meding, Associate Professor at Rinker School of Construction Management, University of Florida will be speaking about his recent portfolio of work that relates to reframing the concept of vulnerability to better reflect its complexity and potential to be something that unites and inspires rather than something to fear and pity. He will share insights into the development of a new theory of vulnerability for disaster studies to reflect this nuance, and also unpack recently published work on how vulnerability is securitized in the case of poverty, prisons, migration and homelessness. The session will invite research and practitioners to be reflective about the way they use labels and categories, and think of new opportunities to better understand and speak about the root causes of disasters.
