When I Grow Up …, mixed media exhibition by Courtney Fairweather

Upper year visual art student Courtney Fairweather’s solo exhibitionWhen I Grow Up … is a critical examination of “traditional” gender roles.

Sweet Dreamsuses illustrations by such people as Mabel LucieAttwell, Muriel Dawson, and Susan B. Pearse, applied to bedroom curtains.These images socialize little girls into acceptance of traditional gender roles whereby they clean house and are passive in the face of male violence. The second part of the exhibition,Doll House,is a metaphorical representation of what girls can expect, if they adhere to these gender roles. This mixed media exhibition also includes photographic material.
