Virtual Fireside Chat with alumnus Jesse Thistle (BA ’15)

On Tuesday, Aug. 18, Alumni Engagement and York Libraries will host alumnus Jesse Thistle (BA ’15)for a fireside chat, author of the award-winning debut memoir,From the Ashes: My Story of Being Métis, Homeless, and Finding My Way.In addition to this event, theYork University Alumni Book Clubis currently reading this memoir, and all alumni are encouraged to sign up.
Jesse Thistle is Métis-Cree, from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. He is an Assistant Professor in Métis Studies at York and a Ph.D candidate in history. He won a Governor General’s Academic Medal in 2016, is a Pierre Elliot Trudeau Scholar and a Vanier Scholar, and his memoirFrom the Asheswas recognized as a Canada Reads 2020 Finalist. His memoir details how his issues with abandonment and addiction led to homelessness, incarceration and his eventual redemption through higher education. It is an exploration into the impact of prejudice and racism revealing a story about hope, resilience and a man who refused to give up.
