Toronto Strong Neighborhood Strategy (TSNS) Education Action Group: Meeting

We are a group of parents, educators, students and community workers in the Jane and Finch community who care about public education. The Education Action Group is a community response to improving educational outcomes and strengthening access to equitable educational opportunities for residents in Jane and Finch. We started in February 2017 as a community response to the Toronto Strong Neighborhood Strategy and are part of the Jane Finch TSNS Taskforce.
Some of the issues we are trying to address are:

school facilities and maintenance issues
suspension and expulsion, policing in schools
Children’s Aid and their relationship with schools
Data on how our schools are doing and sharing our thoughts on why
….and many other issues that are identified by the group.

There are connections between what happens in the community and what happens in the classroom. Things like poverty, social identity or racial bias, and physical space such as housing also affect educational outcomes, not just in-class learning. That is why we are working together as residents, parents, students, educators community workers, organization representatives, school board representatives, post-secondary institutions, and others, in addressing and improving public education in our community.
