“The Underground Railway, Next Stop, Toronto!”
Join us for an interesting discussion of Toronto’s 19th century Black history with historians Adrienne Shadd, Afua Cooper and Karolyn Smardz Frost, authors of the classic work, The Underground Railroad, Next Stop: Toronto! Beautifully illustrated, this new and updated edition is both accessible and engaging. The first edition published in 2002 remains the only volume detailing our city’s rich African Canadian heritage. It is based on extensive primary research and includes historical images, maps and copies of historical documents, as well as artifacts drawn from two major archaeological excavations, 30 years apart. This panel discussion will also offer unique insight into the painstaking research that helped illuminate the vibrant “world-within-a-world” created by freedom seekers and free African American immigrants who made Toronto their home in the tumultuous years before the American Civil War.
