Scholars’ Hub @ Home: Between utopia and destruction: The making of a jazz rhapsody on Soviet-Jewish themes
This presentation tells the story behind the creation of “Between Utopia and Destruction”, an original composition for jazz orchestra based on two melodies derived from mid-20th century Soviet-Jewish sources. In the process of composition, these themes undergo a series of transformations resulting in a piece that is simultaneously true to the source material and yet unquestionably a new and unique work. The talk will offer a glimpse into the creative process of musical composition while situating the melodies in their rich historical and cultural context.
