Michael Burawoy (1947–2025) was a restless, provocative force in sociology, propelling the
discipline beyond its confines and into the public arena. Trained first in mathematics, he turned
to fieldwork in factories from Zambia to Hungary, uncovering the mechanics of exploitation and
consent under capitalism. At UC Berkeley, he sharpened Marxist analysis while insisting that
sociology should be in dialogue with the world, not just itself. As president of the American
Sociological Association and International Sociological Association, he championed a globally
engaged, activist sociology.
Join us in reflecting upon and celebrating his contributions and his remarkable presence—his
warmth, generosity, and the infectious curiosity that made every exchange with him feel
expansive.
