playGround Festival (2023): Alphabet Soup

playGround Festival is York’s annual student-run theatre festival dedicated to giving emerging artists within the York community the opportunity to conceptualize, develop, and present new and original work. For 31 years, the playGround Festival has served as a creative outlet for hundreds of participants to take on all the roles that go into organizing the event, while receiving hands-on experience in the process. Students take on roles as playwrights, dramaturgs, actors, designers, crew, stage managers, and more!

This year we are excited to present 7 shows in two series, Series A and Series B, as well as two installation pieces focusing on this season’s theme Alphabet Soup. With this season’s theme we hoped to inspire a sense of joy and play in our participants! After being isolated for the past two years, we wanted to create a space where creators could experiment with form and multi-disciplinary work, as well as connecting with artists from across different disciplines. We also wanted to support artists who may feel like their work doesn’t fit into a neat box of being theatre, dance, visual art, etc., to give artists the chance to experiment, play and discover new ways to create.
