On, Around and With Water

The Project
On, Around, and With Water is an installation that presents viewers with two experiences of Lake Ontario. One where the microbial life always present in the mud has been encouraged to grow to the point it can be seen. The second, where water has been completely purified of microbial life. The public will be offered a drink of purified Lake Ontario” water as they view the vibrant marbling made by microbial colonies inside sculptural prisms, drawing attention to microorganisms’ constant presence around, on, and within our bodies. Understanding our relationship with water, the lake, as well as microbial life and recognizing the enmeshed nature of our bodies can push us to foster a stronger, more sustainable, and empathetic relationship with each other and our ecosystem as a whole.
The Artists
Death by Committee
Death By Committee is the creative partnership of Nicole Clouston and Quintin Teszeri. The collective operates in the public realm, engaging communities through events, workshops, and artworks. They have produced artworks for Nuit Blanche, co-curated Euro Spa, and most recently created a speculative public artwork for the City of Markham.
Nicole Clouston
Nicole Clouston is a practice-based researcher and teacher who completed her Ph.D. in Visual Art at York University in Toronto. In her practice, she asks: What happens when we acknowledge, through an embodied experience, our connection to a world teeming with life both around and inside us? Nicole has exhibited across Canada and internationally, most recently in Detroit, Michigan. She was the artist in residence at the Coalesce Bio Art Lab at the University at Buffalo and the artist in residence at Idea Projects: Ontario Science Centre’s Studio Residencies at MOCA.
