Join the Life at AXIS Career Conversations panel discussion and get the inside scoop on what it’s really like to work in this field. During this panel, professionals will share their personal stories about breaking into the field, how their career paths took them from graduation to where they are now, what knowledge, skills and experience helped them succeed in their jobs and what types of opportunities are available in this field. The panel discussion will be followed by an open forum where students will have an opportunity to ask the panelists their own questions.

Meet the Panelists!  

Brad Randall Portrait Brad Randell, BA, CIP
Head of Canada Insurance and Chief Agent, AXIS Reinsurance Company (Canadian Branch)

Underwriting executive with over 25 years of commercial insurance experience, including a focus on specialty casualty and management liability lines. Brad joined AXIS in 2008 to establish a domestic specialty lines insurer as part of AXIS’ global branch network. During his tenure, AXIS has grown its Canadian market share in specialty insurance through diversification and strategic relevance for key distribution partners. Prior to joining AXIS, Brad worked at Liberty International Underwriters as Underwriting Manager of the Specialty Casualty Division where his responsibilities included leading a team of management liability underwriters and a portfolio of public company accounts. Brad began his commercial insurance career in 1997 at Royal Sun Alliance as a P&C underwriter in Ontario, Canada.

Brad graduated from the University of Western Ontario where he studied Economics and Business Administration. In 2003, he completed his Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation with the Insurance Institute of Canada. More recently, Brad completed a certificate program in Data Analysis for Management at the London School of Economics.

Athena Fan Portrait Athena Fan, B.Comm, CIP
Senior Underwriter, Casualty, AXIS Reinsurance Company (Canadian Branch)

With ten years’ experience in Insurance, Athena joined AXIS in 2021 and has been helping underwrite and build the Canadian casualty book. Prior to joining AXIS, Athena worked at CNA and Chubb where her focus was on Property and Casualty underwriting for various business classes including Manufacturing, Energy, Real Estate, and wholesale distribution.

Athena graduated from University of British Columbia where she studied Finance and Supply Chain Management at the Sauder School of Business.During her spare time, she enjoys dancing, golfing and snowboarding

Christine Tan Portrait Christine Tan, FCIA, FCAS
Pricing Actuary, Canada

Christine is a Pricing Actuary at Axis Re, with a focus on reinsurance treaty pricing in the North American marketplace. Prior to joining Axis Re, she worked at Farm Mutual Re, where she was responsible for reinsurance pricing in the mutual insurance company community. Christine also plays a role in portfolio monitoring and provides analytical insights to stakeholders to assist in their decision making.Christine is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society, she graduated from the University of Waterloo in 2016. Outside of work, she enjoys doing yoga, exploring Toronto’s cuisine, and learning new languages.

Karan Walia Portrait Karan Walia, B. Sci (Math), Diploma (Engineering)
Reinsurance Treaty Underwriter, Assistance Vice President

A reinsurance/insurance professional with more than eight years of experience, Karan currently works on portfolio risk assessment, contract review, and risk pricing for the placement of insurance for insurance companies.Prior to joining AXIS Reinsurance, he was with Aon Reinsurance Canada as a treaty broker and AVIVA Canada as an Insurance Underwriting, specializing in Global Casualty lines as well as property and auto. Outside of work, he enjoys reading, sailing, and traveling.
