Ian P. Howard Memorial Lecture
The Centre for Vision Research is delighted to host Melvyn Goodale (University of Western Ontario) as the speaker at the 2024 Ian P. Howard Memorial Lecture. Goodale will speak on the topic of “Size matters: how size constancy works for perception and action.”
The images of people and objects on our retina are constantly shrinking and expanding as we move through the world. Yet, remarkably, we see a world that is stable, and things are perceived to be the size they really are. This is a good thing because otherwise our perception of the world would be chaotic and impossible to interpret. Goodale will discuss this “sight constancy” and how relevant calculations take place in the brain.
Ian P. Howard (1927-2013) was the founder of the Centre for Vision Research and was renowned for his research into human visual perception. The Ian P. Howard Lecture Series in Vision Science was established in 2006 to celebrate his enormous contributions to the field and to the international reputation of York’s Centre for Vision Research. Following his death in 2013, the series was renamed the Ian P. Howard Memorial Lecture Series.
