Hydrogen, Pension Fund Investments and the Future of Gas Infrastructure

Hydrogen has been widely promoted as a potential substitute for fossil gas in the decarbonization of energy systems. The repurposing of fossil gas infrastructure to transport hydrogen has been proposed as part of these strategies. Others argue that the use of hydrogen as a replacement for fossil gas faces intractable financial, physical, and technical barriers, and that its role on the decarbonization pathways is likely to be far more limited than its proponents suggest. The Canadian research organization Shift: Action for Pension Wealth and Planetary Health, recently published a report on the financial risks and climate impacts associated with Canadian pension funds’ multi-billion-dollar investments in fossil gas infrastructure, and their proposals to repurpose that infrastructure to transport hydrogen.

Join us for a discussion of this research and its implications for investment and energy systems transitions.

Speakers: Adam Scott, Executive Director, Shift Action for Pension Wealth & Planet Health and Paul Martin, Spitfire Research, Co-Founder, Hydrogen Science Coalition.
