First-Generation Day – Oct. 23
You are invited to participate in First-Generation Day, a new initiative for 2019-20, sponsored by the Office of the Vice-Provost Academic. For more information and to register, visit yorku.ca/firstgen.
Three activities are planned:
10 to 11 a.m. – KICKOFF in conjunction with Red & White Day in Vari Hall. The entire York community is invited. Post your pictures and first-gen stories all day long on social media using #firstgenYU.
Noon to 3 p.m.- ACADEMIC FORUM at the New Student Centre (registration required: eventbrite.ca/e/academic-forum-first-generation-day-2019-tickets-68622905959).
Targeted towards faculty, grad students and staff who work directly or indirectly with students, to build awareness and context about the specific characteristics and challenges faced by first-gen students, and how the student experience can become more engaging, more encouraging and smoother.
Noon to 1 p.m.- LUNCH and registration.
1 to 1:45 p.m.- Panel presentation, featuring: Carl James, Gillian Parekh, Robert Brown- Who Comes to York? Access, participation and graduation trends; Robert Kenedy- Major Findings and Implications of Generic Skills Study at York, University of Toronto, Western and Waterloo; Saskia Van Viegen- Language and higher education: Supporting bi/multilingual student success; Jennifer Myers and Maureen Barnes- The role well-being and access can play in addressing 1st generation vulnerabilities.
1:45 to 3 p.m.- Breakout workshop sessions on topics surrounding access, inclusion, transition and academic success.
4 to 7 p.m. -LAUNCH OF THE FIRST-GENERATION NETWORK at the New Student Centre (registration required: eventbrite.ca/e/networking-event-first-generation-day-2019-tickets-69870569755).
Targeted towards first-gen undergraduate and graduate students and alumni, to inspire, connect and celebrate their university journey.
