Elaborated images, created through participant intervention on photographs, actively disrupt static notions of meaning.
In this presentation, we will situate the practice; explaining what the method consists of, its lineage and contributions to visual participatory methodologies.
Drawing on the projects of several social documentary photographers (Bieke Depoorter, Patrick Waterhouse, Nigel Poor, Wendy Red Star and Laurence Butet-Roch), we will elucidate the decolonial potentials of this photographic praxis.
We’ll conclude with an outline of practical and logistical considerations to keep in mind when using the method, all in the hopes of inspiring more researchers to adopt it in their projects.
