Canada’s private refugee sponsorship program is a remarkable example of cooperation between grassroots religious groups and the Canadiangovernment. In what ways has the development of private sponsorship been influenced by religious groups, and how do religious groups engage withgovernment processes in the work of refugee resettlement? Panelists will draw from their chapters in the recently-published volume,Strangers toNeighbours: Refugee Sponsorship in Context(MQUP 2020).

Geoffrey Cameronis research associate at the Global Migration Lab, Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, University of Toronto. He has a PhD from the University of Toronto, where he was a Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholar, and an MPhil from the University of Oxford. His forthcoming book isSend Them Here: Religion and Refugee Resettlement in North America(McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2021), and he is co-editor ofStrangers to Neighbours: Refugee Sponsorship in Context(McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2020)
Sabine Lehris private sponsorship of refugees manager with the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria. Sabine currentlyserves as chair of the Council of the Canadian Refugee Sponsorship Agreement Holders Association and has previously been amember of the Executive Committee of the Canadian Council for Refugees.Sabine has a Master of Business Administrationdegree in international management from the University of London, Royal Holloway; a PhD in Educational Studies from theUniversity of Victoria; and a Postgraduate Certificate in Refugee and Forced Migration Studies from York University.
Madison Pearlmanis alawyer in Toronto with a cross-sectional practice focused on human rights, privacyand health law for not-for-profits and people with disabilities. She holds a masters in Refugees and Forced Migration Studiesfrom the University of Oxford. Her research has focused primarily on the integration of children’s rights in Canada’s Refugeestatus determination procedures, access to justice for newcomers and the relationship between civil society and refugeeresettlement in Canada.
Luann Good Gingrichis an AssociateProfessor in the School of Social Work and Director of the Global LabourResearch Centre at YorkUniversity in Toronto, Canada. Her researchinvestigates the interface of social welfare and human services, inequality anddiversity, andmigration studies. She applies her theoretical and empiricalwork to the development of approaches to research, social policy and practicethatanalyse and interrupt the processes and outcomes of social exclusion.
Kaylee Perezis the Migration and Resettlement Associate at Mennonite Central Committee in Ontario, based in Waterloo. She also currently serves as the Vice Chair of theNational Sponsorship Agreement Holders Council in Canada and is working with Refugee613, part time, to coordinate a national project called ReSpo: Reviewing andRenewing Refugee Sponsorship.
Thea Enns works in the area of refugee resettlement in Canada. She holds a MSc in Migration Studies from the University of Oxford and has worked on various research papers focusing on the private sponsorship of refugees program.
