Kenya-Jade Pinto Abstract:
Pulling from documentary photography and filmmaking practice, Kenya-Jade will share her experiences in the field and behind the camera including her evolving framework for ethical storytelling and sharing in migratory spaces.
Julie Lassonde Abstract:
Referring to past performance and installation projects, Julie will describe her artistic approach and strategies to incorporate social justice themes. She will focus on ethical questions that arose in the making of her most recent video on long-term immigration detention.
Kenya-Jade Pinto Bio:
Kenya-Jade Pinto is an Indo-Kenyan-Canadian documentary photographer, filmmaker, and lawyer. She grew up chasing crabs on the Kenyan coast, before moving to Alberta’s foothills as a teen. KJ’s hyphenated worldview informs her work where she focuses on non-fiction and narrative projects that navigate themes of displacement, belonging, and access to justice.
Julie Lassonde Bio:
Julie Lassonde is a performance artist in the visual and media arts, as well as a social justice lawyer. Her work involves movement, object manipulation, and audio and video recordings. In 2014-2015, she was an artist-in-residence at Osgoode Hall Law School. With arts councils’ support, her work has been presented locally and internationally.
Ali Kazimi Bio:
York University Professor Ali Kazimi (pronounced Ka-Zim-E) is filmmaker, writer, and visual artist whose work deals with race, social justice, migration, history, memory and archive. In 2019 he received the Governor General’s Award for Visual and Media Arts, as well as a Doctor of Letters, honoris causa from the University of British Columbia.. His critically acclaimed films have been shown at festivals around the world, winning national and international honours and awards.
