Creating Argentina: An Artistic Portrait

How do we define our identity as individuals? How do artists discover their aesthetic identity? And how does a nation, a country, a group of people build their collective identity? As we know, art plays a crucial role in establishing a cultural identity and it also helps us to discover the negotiations between tradition and innovation, between the old and the new. With the help of words, images, and especially music, musicologist and art critic Cintia Cristiá and pianist Alexander Panizza explore different aspects of the abstract notion of Argentina and of our identity as individuals.
Alexander Panizza was born in Toronto and received his musical education in Canada, Argentina, France, and Spain, completing a postgraduate degree at the Royal College of Music, in London. He has performed as a soloist in recitals and with more than thirty orchestras worldwide, including the Barbican Hall in London, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Amphitheater Richelieu at the Sorbonne, Palas Theatre in Athens, Ciurlionis Museum in Lithuania, Teatro Nacional in Panama City and Herkulessaal in Munich. He has recorded Beethoven’s 32 Piano Sonatas, Alberto Ginastera’s complete piano compositions, and works by Carlos Guastavino, Muzzio Clementi and David Winkler (Naxos). Alexander’s 2018-2019 season includes, among other commitments, an international chamber music festival in Patagonia, recitals in Chile, Argentina and Canada, a concert tour in China and performances with orchestra in London, Montevideo and Buenos Aires.
Cintia Cristiá (PhD in History of Music and Musicology by Université de Paris-Sorbonne) is Visiting Research Fellow at the Modern Literature and Culture Research Centre in Ryerson University (2018-2019), where she investigates the significance of music and sound in Florine Stettheimer’s work. Author of a ground-breaking book on Argentinean artist Alejandro Xul Solar, Cintia Cristiá is the editor of a critical volume on migrations and convergences across the arts in the twentieth and twenty-firstcenturies. Her work has been published internationally and has received awards in musicology and art critique. Dr. Cristiá is also a concert presenter and broadcaster, and has curated concert cycles and an exhibition called Dialogues among the muses: music and the visual arts featuring contemporary Argentinian artists and composers.
