Cellphilms: A Participatory Visual Methodology…To Save the World?

Can your phone be a tool for social change? In this interactive, hands-on workshop, we’ll explore cellphilming — a creative participatory visual method that turns everyday smartphones into powerful tools for research, teaching, and activism.

We’ll start with a behind-the-scenes “origin story” of how I got into cellphilming, then dive into real examples of what cellphilms can look like –from personal storytelling to community advocacy. You’ll learn the basics of how to plan, shoot, and edit your own cellphilm using just your phone, along with key visual ethics tips to help you create work that is both impactful and responsible.

We’ll wrap up with a case study that puts our click-bait title to the test: can cellphilms actually “save the world”? You’ll decide.

Come ready to think creatively, experiment with your phone, and imagine new ways to use video for scholarship, storytelling, and social change.
