Celebrating Christina: Christina Petrowska Quilico in Recital
A virtuoso and versatile pianist whose repertoire ranges from Bach to countless present-day premieres, a passionate advocate for new music, and an artist whose performances and more than 50 recordings (four of them JUNO-nominated) have been lauded internationally, Christina Petrowska Quilico has been showered with honours over her 60 years of performing and 40 years in teaching. In 2021, she was named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada “for outstanding scholarly, scientific and artistic achievement”, a year after being inducted into the Order of Canada “for her celebrated career as a classical and contemporary pianist and for championing Canadian music.” In this same two-year period, CBC Radio 2 inducted her into the In Concert Hall of Fame, celebrating the greatest Canadian classical musicians of all time, past and present.
As a professor in York University’s Faculty of Arts, Media, Performance & Design, she has consistently drawn rave reviews from her students – among them singer-songwriter Sarah Slean – who have found her an inspiring and influential teacher. She performed and recorded the complete Mozart violin and piano sonatas with her late York colleague, violinist Jacques Israelievitch, garnering highest praise from such notable publications as Gramophone and American Record Guide. Another York colleague, astronaut Steve MacLean twice took her recordings into space with him. A third, David Mott, wrote his chamber piano concerto Eclipse for her.
York University in 2021 and 2022 presented her with its esteemed Research Awards and is now proud to showcase Christina Petrowska Quilico in recital. She plays dazzling and virtuosic selections, interlaced with meditative and soothing pieces, from Rivers by Ann Southam, with whose music Christina has been closely associated. Rivers is a large collection of pieces that represents all the tempi of running water and reflects Ann’s love of nature, a passion that Christina shares. This performance remembers the important Canadian composer on the 10th anniversary of her passing.
