Canada and the UN Global Compact for Safe, Regular and Orderly Migration

Canada is a “champion” country for the 2018 United Nations Global Compact for Safe, Regular and Orderly Migration (GCM). In addition to advocating for the implementation of the GCM and for building positive migration narratives, the GCM champion countries are expected to generate guidance and promising practices, and to demonstrate support for the GCM through their leadership and engagement in the multilateral processes. This presentation will discuss Canada’s role as a champion country and its contribution to the implementation of the GCM objectives. Drawing on the preliminary findings of a field work conducted in Toronto in 2021-22, the presentation will also explore whether and how the GCM has been translated into action on the ground.
