In the context of an institution that acts as an essential repository for documents, images and archives, this exhibition asks: what happens when artists mobilize the archive as a creative medium? The artworks in ARCHIVES BY ARTISTS contain items typically found in archives, such as photos, postcards, letters, maps and clippings, but also unconventional items imbued with smells and sounds. The artists revisit historical events, investigate aspects of memory and preservation, illuminate the artists’ own life and practice, reflect upon their community and social networks, as well as question the nature and dynamics of the archive itself.

ARCHIVES BY ARTISTS presents a diverse range of conceptual strategies used by artists since the 1960s to explore and imaginatively re-conceive the archive. The international scope of the exhibition features works by Ioannis Anastasiou and Majka Dokudowicz, Christian Boltanski, Nick Cave and Bob Faust, Amanda Chestnut, William N. Copley, Dora García, Kiran Kumār, Kiwi Menrath, Sophie Nys, Jürgen O. Olbrich, Dieter Roth, Vicky Sabourin, Camille Turner and Yaniya Lee, Danh Vō, and Laurie Young.
