ABOUT
Professor Hung Keung is an internationally renowned digital media artist, researcher, scholar and designer. He graduated from the Swire School of Design at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the Department of Fine Arts at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Later, he pursued further studies in film and video at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, University of the Arts London, where he obtained a master’s degree. He then earned a doctoral degree from the Planetary Collegium, Zurich University of the Arts, Zurich, Switzerland and the University of Plymouth. Professor Hung Keung has served as a visiting scholar, artist, and guest lecturer at various international universities, including the Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie, Germany (2001-2002), Kolding Design College, Denmark (2002), University of California Berkeley, USA (2006), the University of Oregon (2011), the Australian National University (2015), Western University, Canada (2019), and the University of Hawai’i (2022). He has been engaged in cultural and academic exchanges and promotion activities, involving research, creation, and exhibitions in different fields and interdisciplinary media art.

Since 1995, Professor Hung Keung has been actively involved in the creation and research of films, videos, and digital media art. In the field of academic and innovative activities, his doctoral research focused on the reappropriation of Chinese art in the context of digital media, exploring theoretical development and creative practices. His significant academic research papers, posters, and experimental projects have been published and exhibited in various international academic journals, exhibitions, biennials and international conferences.

Professor Hung Keung’s early experimental films and videos received awards such as the Gold Award, Jury’s Special Award (Video Category), and Outstanding Award in the Hong Kong Independent Short Film and Video Awards from 1998 to 1999. He has also received recognition through numerous international awards, including being the first Chinese artist to receive the “Special Mention Interactive CD-ROM Award” at the International New Media Arts Festival in Greece and the “Special Award for New Media” in Croatia. He has also won the “Best Short Ambient Video Award” at the BBC British Film Festival, the “Best of EMAF” at the European Media Art Festival, the Gold Award at the International Invention Innovation Competition and the International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva

Professor Hung has been twice honoured with the Artist of the Year (Media Art) by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (ADC). In addition, he has received the Best Artist of the Year Award (Media Art) and the Outstanding Young Artist Award (Film and Media Art) from ADC, the Achievement Award from the Hong Kong Museum of Art for the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Biennial, Global Design Awards (Digital) presented by the Hong Kong Designers Association, and commendation from the Secretary for Home Affairs for outstanding contributions to the promotion of cultural and artistic development. Professor Hung has also been a recipient of the “German Academic Exchange Scholarship” and the “Asian Cultural Council – Désirée and Hans Michael Jebsen Fellowship.”
