STS Departmental Seminar Series – October 22nd – Dr. Zbigniew Stachniak (York University) – “The IBM Images Archive”

In the fourth installment of the STS Departmental Seminar Series Dr. Zbigniew Stachniak (Department of Computer Science and Engineering, York University) will talk about the ‘The IBM Images Archive’ that was/is on display at York University:
Since its incorporation in 1917, IBM Canada has been documenting its corporate history as well as Canada’s evolving technological, cultural, and social landscape in hundreds of thousands of photographs and films. A large volume of this material (the IBM Images Archive) have survived thanks to the collecting and curatorial efforts of several people at IBM Canada. The size, scope, and richness of the photographed themes make the IBM Canada Images Archive one of the most significant records of Canada’s technological development in the last century. Recently, the archive has been donated by IBM Canada to York University Libraries and will become part of the Clara Thomas Archives and Special Collections located in the Scott Library.
In this talk, I discuss the scope, the content, and the significance of the IBM Canada Images Archive, illustrating the presentation with the selection of photographs taken between the 1920s and 80s.
