Public Forum on China’s Sharp Power in Hong Kong

The Chinese Communist Regime (CCR) in China may be the most powerful authoritarian regimes. It has developed sophisticated strategies and skills to project influence beyond its border. Hong Kong has been the experimental ground of China’s sharp power to pressurize, neutralize, and weaken liberal value and democratic institutions. The case of Hong Kong will enable the international community to formulate an appropriate strategy to respond to the global advancement of authoritarianism.The speaker will analyze CCR sharp power tools in different sectors of Hong Kong, such as law, civil society, election, religion, and economics, and review a report on the topic recently published in Hong Kong by a newly established civil society group- Hong Kong Civil Hub. Johnson Ching-Yin Yeung is a Hong Konger, human right advocate and activist. He is the chairperson of the Hong Kong Civil Hub, an organization that aims to connect the Hong Kong civil society with international communities sharing the same values in upholding and pursuing the rule of law, democracy, and human rights. He was a Hurford Youth Fellow at the National Endowment for Democracy. He holds a Master of Laws in Human Rights and is concerned about the shrinking civic spaces in both Hong Kong and China. His experiences in organizing the student movement and the Umbrella Movement convince him that the daily practice of democracy is equally important as the establishment of a democratic institution.
