Dialogue on Translation Problems with Interarts Poetry: Exchanges between the Translator and the Poet

This poetry reading presents Andew Parkin’s ekphrastic poetry, “Star of a Thousand Years,” an ode to Chinese film producer, Sir Run Run Shaw, to celebrate his 100th birthday. This inter-arts poem and its translation by Jessica Tsui-yan Li were both published in Star with a Thousand Moons (2018). Through a dialogue between the writer and the translator, this event will throw light on the ekphrastic experience.
Andrew Parkin is Professor Emeritus, Chinese University of Hong Kong. He authored two novels as part of a trilogy, Private Dancers or Responsible Women and Bruno’s Secret and the third novel, Third Wave, is forthcoming. His latest book of poetry is the bilingual English/ Chinese Star with a Thousand Moons (Victoria: Ekstasis Editions, May 2018).
Jessica Tsui-Yan Li is Assistant Professor in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics at York University where she teaches Chinese literature, film, drama and culture at. She is President of the Canadian Comparative Literature Association, and an International Editorial Board Member in the Springer book series on “Digital Culture and Humanities Series: Changes, Chances and Challenges in Asian and Global Contexts.”
