Did you know that there are science related sectors, where, by 2029, there will be four jobs available for every one candidate? This workshop provides an overview of career exploration, focussing in on how the skills from your science degree, and the experiences you are gaining at York, are building a foundation for your future in the sciences and other sectors. You’ll walk away with resources that will allow you to explore your career options, and the tools to determine which options best suit you.

Career Conversations: Leveraging Your Labcoat

Have you wondered which jobs your Science degree can lead to? Meet employers and York alumni who utilized their Science background to launch into various career pathways. Learn how they were able to market their transferable skills and knowledge gained during their Science degree and what career insights they’ve learned throughout their journeys thus far. The panel discussion will be followed by an open forum where students will have an opportunity to ask the panelists their own questions and network with industry professionals.

Adithya Kurup’s Bio: Adithya is a dedicated sustainability advocate with a First-Class Honours BSc in Environmental Biology from York University. Currently, as Assistant Plastics Product Manager at Loblaw Brands, he leads the Plastics initiative to transition all of their control brand items to recycle ready or reusable packaging by 2025. His commitment to making a positive difference drives him to engage consistently in projects fostering sustainability, meaningful change, and social impact.  

Clare Che’s Bio: Clare is a E-Learning and Training Developer at the Centre of Forensic Sciences (CFS), working on instructional video productions and e-learning content creation. Prior to this, she worked in the CFS Biology section as a Screening Biologist for 4 years, performing forensic examinations for bodily fluids on evidence items obtained from homicide and sexual assault cases. Before joining the CFS, Clare specialized in glioblastoma and cystic fibrosis research at SickKids Hospital, working as a research technologist. Clare obtained her B.Sc. in Biochemistry from Queen’s University and runs a wedding photography business in her free time.

Jessica D’Angelo’s Bio: Jessica is currently a Medical Laboratory Technologist at LifeLabs Medical Laboratory Services. She began her post-secondary journey as an undergraduate student at York University, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science with Honours in the Biomedical Science stream.  This led her to pursue a Master of Science in Biology, which she also completed at York University.  With a desire to apply her strong background in molecular biology to the healthcare setting, she later received an Advanced Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science from The Michener Institute, which led her to her current role. 

Kelly is a seasoned leader with 24 years of experience at Scotiabank and a Director in Global Compliance and AML. In her role, she leads a dynamic Reporting and Change Management team, ensuring regulatory compliance and driving impactful transformations. She holds a BScH in Life Sciences, a Master of Science in Anatomy and Cell Biology from Queen’s University and a Master of Business Administration from York University. With a solid academic background and relevant experience in Canadian Banking, Finance, Compliance, and Risk, Kelly brings a diverse skill set to the table.  Kelly’s remarkable journey and unique blend of scientific and financial knowledge make her an invaluable resource for science students aspiring to carve their paths in compliance, risk management, and leadership.

Getting your dream opportunities during your studies and beyond is more than having a degree – you need to make yourself stand out amongst the crowd and shine to potential employers and companies! This session will help you show off the experience and skills you’ve gained, develop your networking skills (including LinkedIn), and build an effective strategy for finding jobs and opportunities.
