York University Annual Chinese Culture Day 2024

The York University Chinese Culture Day 2024 event will celebrate Chinese literature and culture during the Chinese Lunar New Year Festival on Feb. 14.

This in-person event features three keynote public lectures:

• “Lingnan Culture as Method: How to Study Wong Fei-hung Legend?” by Dr. Yu Chang, author of Wong Fei-hung Legend and Lingnan Culture;
• “Preservation of Chinese Heritage through Cantonese Opera in Canada” by Dr. Jack Leong, senior librarian and former associate dean of research and open scholarship at York University Libraries; and
• “Domesticating Suzie: Cultural Politics in the Rewriting of The World of Suzie Wong” by Dr. Chris Song, assistant professor, University of Toronto.

There will also be a Peking Opera performance: Drunken Concubine performed by Carrie Ling Wan Leung; and a Cantonese Opera performance: Scramble for an Umbrella from Praying to the Moon, one of the four Southern Opera classics, performed by Alice K. Chan, director and instructor of the Starlight Chinese Opera Performing Arts Centre, and Michelle Cai.

This event is organized by Professor Jessica Tsui-yan Li, associate professor of the Chinese Program at York University, and cordially sponsored by the Department of Languages, Literatures & Linguistics in York’s Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, and the York Centre of Asian Studies.
