Scholars’ Hub @ Home | Intimate partner violence and access to justice

Janet Mosher, Associate Professor, Osgoode Hall Law School

Many survivors of intimate partner violence, especially when they leave or attempt to leave an abusive relationship, must navigate two or more legal domains — among them family, criminal, child welfare, and immigration law. While there is a sizeable body of Canadian research on access to justice challenges in each of these areas of law, this talk highlights the unique and complex challenges that arise for survivors when two or more of these legal domains are engaged and the reality that this engagement is often triggered by abusive partners as a means to coerce, control, and harm their (former) intimate partners.
