YUEAN presents Alumni Spotlight: Teaching, Technology, and Transformation

The York University Education Alumni Network (YUEAN) invites you to join us for our Alumni Spotlight on Thursday, October 30.

This special panel-forum features three York University alumni sharing their insights on AI in education, careers beyond the classroom and digital learning. The evening begins with a panel discussion, followed by an intimate forum to spark conversation and networking among alumni and students.

Valerie Lucic (BA ’17), Manager, Curriculum, Digital Learning, TVO

Valerie Lucic holds a Master of Teaching degree from the University of Toronto, where she focused on research-based approaches to curriculum and pedagogy. After graduating, she applied her expertise in traditional classroom settings, teaching both elementary and high school students. Valerie later expanded her impact beyond the classroom as a Course Developer, designing high school courses aligned with the Ontario Ministry of Education and grounded in effective online learning practices. She went on to work as an Academic Officer, supporting over 20,000 students at Ontario’s largest virtual high schoolCurrently, Valerie is the Manager, Curriculum at TVO, where she leads a team of Curriculum Specialists responsible for delivering high-quality digital course content across ILC courses, teacher-led Ministry courses, and TVO Learn. She is deeply passionate about teaching and learning and remains a strong advocate for equitable, high-quality education for students across Ontario and beyond.

Joe Romano (BFA ’08, BEd ’08, MEd ’12), Associate Director, Learning Innovation & Continuous Improvement, OISE

Joe Romano is an accomplished education leader specializing in learning innovation and systems improvement. As Associate Director of Learning Innovation & Continuous Improvement at OISE, University of Toronto, he collaborates on developing professional learning solutions across education workforce sectors. A former K-12 Principal, Educator Coach, Teacher, and Education Entrepreneur, Joe brings deep expertise in professional learning, educational technology integration, and K-20 systems improvement, with experience spanning public school boards and higher education. Today, he applies a continuous improvement lens to strengthen Ontario’s K-12 education workforce—advancing workforce-aligned learning initiatives, building partnerships with schools and boards, and designing responsive solutions that drive meaningful system improvement.

Jason Singh (BEd ’11), Director of Education, Medix College of Healthcare and Chair, YUEAN

Jason Singh, is an educational leader and innovator whose journey with AI began as a simple curiosity — how could technology make learning more inclusive and engaging? That question led him to become a leading voice in AI adoption within education. As Director of Education at Medix College, Jason has guided the organization, staff and students in using AI ethically and effectively, helping shape policy and practice across the institution. He’s also the author of Unlocking AI’s Potential for Educators, a hands-on guide for teachers exploring this new frontier. Jason also serves as Chair of the York University Faculty of Education Alumni Network, where he’s building connections between students, alumni, and educators. Through his work, Jason continues to champion the use of AI as a tool for equity, empowerment, and lasting change in education.
