York University Annual Culture Day 2025
York University’s Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics will host the York University Annual Chinese Culture Day event to celebrate Chinese literature and culture on the first day of the Chinese Lunar New Year of the Snake on January 29, 2025.
This in-person event features three keynote public lectures, “Re-writing Scripts: Recent Graphic Memoirs by Chinese American and Chinese Canadian Authors” by Eleanor Ty, (Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Professor, English, Wilfrid Laurier University); “Narrating Chinese Canadian Stories Behind Exclusion: Beyond the Silence” by Justin Poy, (Honorary Patron, Asian Heritage Month; Executive Producer, Exclusion: Beyond the Silence; President & Creative Director, The Justin Poy Agency); and “Hospitality of a New Wave: Rethinking Cantonese Churches’ Support for Hong Kong Diasporas in Canada” by Bryan Chung Yuen Chan, (DMin., Trinity Evangelical Divinity School). Jack Hang-tat Leong, (Digital Initiatives Librarian, York University) will chair the panel discussion after the presentations.
There will also be Tai-Chi performances by Jason Kwok (Tai-Chi Master), and his disciples, Joana Ho, Patricia Chung, Donna Tse, Belinda Wong, Martin Ma, Rosanna Chu, Christina Tso.
“York University Annual Chinese Culture Day is the most important event at York to celebrate Chinese New Year and to bring faculty members, students, and the wider Toronto community together to explore the diversity and complexity of Chinese literature and culture,” said event organizer Jessica Tsui-yan Li, (associate professor, the Chinese Program, DLLL, York University). “The lectures and performances help promote Chinese cultural literacy in the communities of York University and the greater GTA. Participants will engage in the intercultural knowledge exchange during the question-and-answer section in the event and students will further discuss the topics in the classrooms afterwards.”
