SUMMARY:Urban Revolutions: Urbanisation and (Neo-)Colonialism in Transatlantic Context
DESCRIPTION:Please join us in HNES building, room 141, for a launch/discussion event to mark the publication of Professor Stefan Kipfer’s new book: Urban Revolutions: Urbanisation and (Neo-)Colonialism in Transatlantic Context (published in Brill’s Historical Materialism Book Series).\nThe event will feature some comments on the book by Stefan himself, followed by discussion from two notable scholars of urban politics: Professor Kanishka Goonewardena (Department of Geography and Planning, University of Toronto) and Professor Laam Hae (Department of Politics, York University).\n About The Author: Stefan Kipfer teaches in the Faculty of\nEnvironmental & Urban Change at York University. He has\npublished widely on space, social theory and urban politics,\nincluding the co-edited Space, Difference, Everyday Life:\nReading Henri Lefebvre and Gramsci Space Nature Politics.\nDiscussants: Prof. Kanishka Goonewardena (Geography and\nPlanning, University of Toronto) and Prof. Laam Hae (Politics,\nYork University).\nWhat do struggles over pipelines in Canada, housing estates \nin France, and shantytowns in Martinique have in common? In \nUrban Revolutions, Stefan Kipfer shows how these struggles \nforce us to understand the (neo-)colonial aspects of capitalist \nurbanization in a comparatively and historically nuanced \nfashion. \nIn so doing, he demonstrates that urban research can offer a \nrich, if uneven, terrain upon which to develop the relationship \nbetween Marxist and anti-colonial intellectual traditions. \nAfter a detailed dialogue between Henri Lefebvre and \nFrantz Fanon, Kipfer engages creole literature in the French \nAntilles, Indigenous radicalism in North America and \npolitical anti-racism in mainland France.\n
