SUMMARY:Variations on Broken Lines
DESCRIPTION:NUIT BLANCHE \nThe Project\nVariations on Broken Lines is a site-specific performative installation that explores notions of the liminal in our current digital culture. The installation is located at the North York Civic Center. A constellation of video performances, moving-image, and documentation archives are projected simultaneously onto different surfaces throughout space. This installation takes the form of an event that offers generative and transformative experiences in which the audience participates in a ritual of becoming, thereby adding new layers and meanings to the work. The felt experience may call into question the space between the virtual and real, corporeal and technological, and the consideration of diaspora as an ongoing dwelling beyond borders, time, and space.\nThe Artist\nNava Messas-Waxman ( https://www.navawaxman.com/ ) is a Canadian interdisciplinary artist who works with visual and time-based media, including choreography, moving images, and installation. Her work explores identity, memory, liminality, and the body as an archive. Her Moroccan, Judeo-Amazigh immigrant background has shaped her interest in themes of movement, migration, time, and the transient nature of gestures embedded in complex artistic, cultural, and personal registers. Nava is currently a Ph.D. student in the department of Visual Arts at York University.\nAcknowledgements\nThe artists would like to thank everyone who contributed and supported this project.\nVariations on Broken Lines\nOct 1-2, 2022\n7pm-7am\nFREE\nNorth York Centre Mall (5160 Yonge St. Toronto)\nThis event is a part of the York University Year of the Arts, ( https://ampd.yorku.ca/year-of-the-arts/ ) presented by the York University School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design (AMPD).\n
