SUMMARY:Aligning Expectations in Research Mentoring Relationships
DESCRIPTION:The Faculty of Science Committee of Teaching and Learning (CoTL) presents Aligning Expectations in Research Mentoring Relationships, featuring guest speaker Dr. Erin Dolan (University of Georgia).\nDate and time\nThursday March 24 at 12-1 pm via Zoom: https://yorku.zoom.us/s/99261691484 ( https://yorku.zoom.us/s/99261691484 )\nOverview\nHaving a shared understanding about expectations is critical for mentoring relationships to be effective. Problems often arise between mentors and mentees when there are misunderstandings about expectations. Because expectations change over time, mentors and mentees need to periodically reflect and clearly communicate about expectations. This practical session will involve discussion of scenarios resulting from misaligned expectations and how they could be resolved or prevented. The session will highlight strategies and tools useful for articulating and aligning expectations.\nAbout the speaker\nDr. Erin Dolan is a Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Georgia Athletic Association Professor of Innovative Science Education at the University of Georgia. As a graduate student in Neuroscience at University of California at San Francisco, she volunteered extensively in K-12 schools, which prompted her to pursue a career in biology education. She teaches introductory biology and biochemistry. Her research group studies undergraduate and graduate students’ career development and decision-making, especially the influence of research training and mentoring. After ten years as Editor-in-Chief of the biology education journal, CBE – Life Sciences Education, she now serves the journal as a Senior Editor.\n
