SUMMARY:Scholars’ Hub @ Home | Populism, legality and the politics of diversity in Canada
DESCRIPTION:Emily Laxer, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, Glendon College \nPopulism has become a key buzzword in world politics recently. From the U.S.’s Donald Trump, to the U.K.’s Brexit, to India’s Narendra Modi, right-wing populist movements are transforming politics in several political systems. Among the troubling elements of this populist surge is its association with nativist campaigns to curb migration and limit the rights of minorities. This talk considers the role of right-wing populism in shaping the contemporary politics of diversity in Canada. Drawing examples from federal and provincial politics – especially Québec’s – this talk will show how populist challenges to the rule of law pose a considerable threat to minority rights.\nRegister: https://bit.ly/3H1fkVu ( https://bit.ly/3H1fkVu )\n\nEmily Laxer, professeure adjointe du Département de sociologie de Glendon\nRécemment, le populisme est devenu un mot à la mode en politique mondiale.
